Pilates Institute - About Us

Joseph Pilates’ Method, initially attracted dancers who had already achieved a high level of physical ability and were looking for new ways of movement. As recently as a decade ago this still was the case with the majority of practitioners , however, when health clubs started to introduce group Pilates classes into their timetable, it became apparent that the Pilates client base would change dramatically.

The Pilates Institute, which began teaching fitness instructors the Pilates Method during 1999, soon realised that participants were struggling with the original repertoire as taught by Joseph Pilates. It was then that the classic repertoire was modified using research from Australian physiotherapists.

The Pilates Institute faculty examined each of the 34 original movements with a view to maintaining the set up and sequencing of neutral spine, mild engagement and diaphragmatic breathing. We were able to modify 15 of the original movements to a sufficient level, which became the basis for our Matwork 1 course. By applying the technique consistently the Pilates Institute Method has been extremely successful in introducing beginners of all ages and abilities to the Pilates technique. With this foundation, people can continue to work within their range of ability and achieve excellent results, or develop the ability to effectively practice Joseph’s original movements.

The Pilates Institute approach to the technique is research and evidence based. Our goal is for everyone to achieve the original 34 movements in the sequence that Joseph Pilates advocated, regardless of age, injury problems or postural disadvantages. The Pilates Institute Method is inclusive and allows teachers to offer classes and personal training to a broad spectrum of clients.
